All About National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)

The Arc of Bartholomew County is proud to support National Disability Employment Awareness Month, also called NDEAM.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is about honoring and recognizing the accomplishments of people with disabilities in the workplace.

Join us this October in helping us recognize the vital role that employees with disabilities play in our communities.

What is NDEAM?

National Disabilities Awareness Month is a month of awareness and appreciation in October for our society members working with disabilities. During this time, we can think about the important part of our community that employees with disabilities make up and how we interact with them.  NDEAM can also be a time of reflection on how policies, both on the company and governmental level,  affect employees with disabilities. We can examine our society and see how to make it more equitable for those around us.

Why is NDEAM Important?

NDEAM is important for numerous reasons. For one, it can help working people with disabilities feel appreciated and like their work is seen and their voices are heard. Even more so, it can be a time of meaningful reform where people recognize policies and practices that are harmful or unfair to employees with disabilities and then fix them. NDEAM gives us the time to reflect on our society and see how we can improve it for the better.

What can I do to help?

You can help during this October by evaluating your work and the area around you. Is it safe and equitable for people with disabilities? If it is not, or you feel that it can be improved, reach out to your boss and local legislator and have your voice heard. You can also band with other agents in your community and work towards building a more equitable future for employees with disabilities.

Another thing you could do is spread the word about NDEAM and build an equitable future for employees with disabilities. You could hold a talk, post on social media, or talk to your work or community about holding an event. There are many things you can do to help raise awareness around NDEAM.
